About the position

The Medical Laboratory Technician plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by performing analyses on clinical specimens, ensuring the accuracy and quality of test data, and providing essential information to physicians. This position is dedicated to patient care and involves a variety of laboratory tasks, including testing, specimen processing, and maintaining laboratory equipment. The technician is also responsible for adhering to safety and quality standards while contributing to the overall improvement of laboratory services.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analysis on clinical specimens and provide accurate information to physicians.
  • Assure the quality of test data and communicate the validity and significance of test results.
  • Demonstrate safe and competent use of laboratory equipment and software.
  • Prioritize workflow based on medical necessity and urgency.
  • Conduct testing while ensuring instrumentation operates within established guidelines.
  • Process and package specimens according to procedure manuals and age-specific requirements.
  • Report results in accordance with specimen priority and quality assurance protocols.
  • Perform phlebotomies and urine drug screens as requested.
  • Maintain inventory levels and restock supplies as needed.
  • Instruct students and orient new employees as required.

Requirements

  • Associate of Science degree from a NAACLS accredited medical laboratory/clinical laboratory technical education program.
  • Certification is required within the first year of hire; ASCP certification is preferred.
  • Must maintain a minimum of 36 contact hours of continuing education every three years for certifications received in 2004 or later.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with laboratory software systems such as Sunquest and Eclipses.
  • Participation in professional organizations related to laboratory services.
