About the position

The Medical Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for processing, organizing, labeling, and transporting specimens for laboratory testing. This entry-level position involves data management within the Laboratory Information System and performing clerical tasks such as answering phones and filing documents. The role emphasizes collaboration with the patient care team and maintaining a positive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Process, organize, label, and transport specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Input and extract data from the Laboratory Information System.
  • Perform clerical tasks including answering phones and filing documents.
  • Prepare specimens for courier pick up and delivery to referral labs.
  • Communicate with laboratory personnel regarding specimen transport needs.
  • File requisitions, reports, and other pathology materials appropriately.
  • Organize workload and set priorities to maintain efficiency.
  • Keep work area neat, clean, and well stocked.
  • Assist others and perform additional tasks to utilize available work time effectively.
  • Receive, triage, order, label, and transport specimens for testing.
  • Handle STAT samples expeditiously and assist with specimen grossing as needed.
  • Recognize and correct basic problems with specimens and processing equipment.
  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment following all safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills to handle a heavy workload and maintain accuracy.
  • Basic computer knowledge to operate multiple systems including Office software.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English for effective communication.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Knowledge of specimen requirements for testing and processing.
