About the position
The Medical Laboratory Assistant II plays a crucial role in the laboratory by processing, organizing, labeling, and transporting specimens for testing. This position requires advanced skills in phlebotomy and specialty tasks, serving as a role model and preceptor for other staff members. The assistant is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of laboratory operations while maintaining safety and compliance with policies.
Responsibilities
- Input and extract data from the Laboratory Information System and perform clerical tasks such as answering phones and filing documents.
- Receive, triage, order, label, and transport specimens for laboratory testing.
- Process specimens, aliquots, and/or slides/blocks according to laboratory procedures.
- Handle STAT samples expeditiously.
- Assist pathologist and/or other laboratory personnel with specimen grossing as needed.
- Recognize problems (such as mislabels, incorrect tube type) and take corrective action to solve basic issues.
- Operate automated instrumentation while following safety measures.
- Perform and document maintenance on processing equipment.
- Perform phlebotomy and other specialized specimen collection procedures for patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Assist with advanced functions in specialty areas such as Anatomical Pathology, Microbiology, and Molecular.
- Maintain a safe environment within the laboratory, adhering to safety policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician by American Medical Technologists (AMT).
- 3 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
