About the position
The Medical Laboratory Assistant II plays a crucial role in the laboratory by processing, organizing, labeling, and transporting specimens for testing. This position requires advanced skills in phlebotomy and specialty tasks, serving as a role model and preceptor for other staff members.
Responsibilities
- Input and extract data from the Laboratory Information System and perform clerical tasks such as answering phones and filing documents.
- Receive, triage, order, label, and transport specimens for laboratory testing.
- Process specimens, aliquots, and/or slides/blocks according to laboratory procedures and for referral laboratories.
- Handle STAT samples expeditiously.
- Assist pathologist and/or other laboratory personnel with specimen grossing as needed.
- Recognize problems (such as mislabels, incorrect tube type, etc.), identify causes, and take corrective action to solve basic problems.
- Operate automated instrumentation as applicable, following all safety measures.
- Perform and document any processing equipment maintenance.
- Perform phlebotomy and other specialized specimen collection procedures for patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Assist with frozen sections, special stain procedures, cytology processing, fine needle aspirations (FNAs), and other section-specific specialty tasks as per section scope.
- Maintain a safe environment within the laboratory, following all policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials, security, and emergency preparedness.
Requirements
- Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician by American Medical Technologists (AMT).
- 3 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
