About the position

The Medical Laboratory Assistant II is responsible for processing, organizing, labeling, and transporting specimens for laboratory testing. This role requires advanced functions such as phlebotomy and serves as a role model and preceptor for other staff members. The position involves data management within the Laboratory Information System and various clerical tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, triage, order, label, and transport specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Process specimens, aliquots, and/or slides/blocks according to procedures.
  • Handle STAT samples expeditiously.
  • Assist pathologist and/or other laboratory personnel with specimen grossing as needed.
  • Recognize problems such as mislabels or incorrect tube types, identify causes, and take corrective action.
  • Operate automated instrumentation following all safety measures.
  • Perform and document any processing equipment maintenance.
  • Perform phlebotomy and other specialized specimen collection procedures for patients.
  • Assist with frozen sections, special stain procedures, cytology processing, and fine needle aspirations in specialty areas.
  • Maintain a safe environment within the laboratory, following all safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience as a laboratory assistant with competency in phlebotomy and laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to operate automated laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of safety measures and procedures in a laboratory setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in phlebotomy or laboratory assistance.
  • Experience in specialty areas such as Anatomical Pathology, Microbiology, or Molecular.
