About the position

The position involves performing routine and special diagnostic test procedures, supporting quality control, documentation, function verification, instrument maintenance, specimen collection, and clerical work as required. The role is essential in ensuring accurate laboratory results and maintaining the integrity of the testing process.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and document Quality Control.
  • Verify functioning of instruments.
  • Perform initial evaluation and handling of incoming specimens including separation, centrifugation, and preservation procedures.
  • Sort and organize specimen batches.
  • Organize, label, and number specimens, worksheets, and appropriate test materials in test set-up.
  • Measure and dispense specimens and reagents in the test system.
  • Monitor manual functions of test systems and instruments to assure accuracy and precision.
  • Record and evaluate programmed quality control results according to established control limits.
  • Enter test results and related data into laboratory computer and logbook after controls are evaluated.
  • Call 'alert values' to appropriate caregivers.
  • Accurately report test results, understanding the inter-relationships between patient condition, medication, and timing of specimen collection.
  • Perform routine scheduled maintenance, cleaning, and decontamination of instruments and work areas.
  • Answer telephone, take requests for collection, and provide information as needed.
  • Search for reports in computer, worksheets, or files.
  • Report outdating reagent supplies and replenish lab stock of consumable materials.
  • Prepare reagent solutions as directed and log incoming supplies.
  • Observe and report unusual situations, reactions, and conditions to responsible person.
  • Participate in structured and informal in-service and continuing education activities.
  • Accept assignment to weekend and holiday rotation as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma / GED.
  • Bachelor's Degree with 24 semester hours of Science (6 hours Chemistry, 6 hours Biology, and 12 hours of Chemistry, Biology, or medical laboratory technology).
  • One (1) year Laboratory experience preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Familiarity with quality control procedures in a laboratory setting.
