About the position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is responsible for the accurate performance, validation, and reporting of laboratory test results essential for patient diagnosis and treatment. This role involves overseeing quality control, equipment maintenance, and the development of new procedures within the Core Lab. The position requires collaboration with other laboratory personnel and adherence to compliance standards, ensuring the highest quality of laboratory services.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately performs and interprets all laboratory tests in an assigned area.
  • Resolves advanced-level problems with equipment and test systems.
  • Ensures compliance with test system processes and monitors the accuracy of testing procedures.
  • Promotes patient safety and reports any issues promptly to laboratory leadership.
  • Performs and may take a lead role in QC programs and assists in Quality Program initiatives.
  • Independently analyzes and monitors quality data for continual improvement opportunities.
  • Troubleshoots and performs preventive maintenance procedures as assigned.
  • Writes/conducts orientation, training, competency assessment and procedures for new personnel.
  • Participates in verification and validation of new equipment and test systems.
  • Assists in scheduling of workflow to ensure adequate coverage in the lab at all times.
  • Inventories, receives and stores supplies as required.
  • Creates and promotes a positive work climate and overall team effort of the sections.
  • Participates in continuing education requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or in one of the biological, chemical or physical sciences and completion of an approved training program.
  • Four (4) years of Medical Technologist experience required, with two (2) years in method validation, quality control evaluation, and troubleshooting analyzers.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS from the ASCP, NRCC, ABB, ASCPi required within six (6) months of hire if not licensed in Tennessee.

Nice-to-haves

  • Recent generalist, chemistry or hematology experience preferred.
