About the position
The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs testing of patient samples in a medical laboratory to provide data for diagnosing and treating diseases. This role involves ensuring the validity and accuracy of test results, problem resolution across the testing continuum, quality control, and equipment maintenance with minimal supervision, while adhering to the Stormont Vail Tenets.
Responsibilities
- Processes and handles blood and/or other biological specimens according to established procedures.
- Performs and results a variety of clinical laboratory tests in areas such as hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, and immunohematology.
- Conducts quality control on analytical systems and recognizes systems that are out of control.
- Understands the theory involved in procedures and troubleshoots when questionable or erratic results occur.
- Reports unusual or erratic results to laboratory leadership.
- Maintains equipment as directed by manufacturers' recommendations and laboratory policy.
- Participates in the proficiency testing program as assigned.
- Researches and sets up new procedures/analytical equipment.
- Writes, reviews, and edits laboratory documents in the document management system.
- Inventory supplies as directed by lab leadership.
- Provides education and training to new team members, students, and interns.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
- 1 year of experience performing specimen collecting or testing.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist - ASCP Certification or equivalent.
