About the position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist position in Kyle, TX, is a contract opportunity with the potential for permanent placement. This role requires a dedicated professional to work the 3rd shift, from 9 PM to 7:30 AM, with rotating weekends and holidays. The initial training period will be conducted on the first shift for two weeks to ensure that the selected candidate is well-prepared for the responsibilities of the position. The projected duration of this contract is six months, with the possibility of transitioning to a permanent role based on performance and business needs. As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks that are essential to the functioning of the laboratory. This includes determining the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria, performing both routine and complex technical procedures in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures, and monitoring, operating, and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation to ensure proper functionality. You will also be expected to demonstrate technical decision-making skills regarding testing and problem-solving, as well as prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls. Accurate and timely reporting of test results is crucial for delivering quality patient care, and you will be responsible for performing and documenting preventive maintenance and quality control procedures. Additionally, you will need to identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary and assist with the processing of specimens when required. Maintaining a safe work environment and adhering to safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment, is also a key aspect of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria.
  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
  • Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls.
  • Report accurate and timely test results to deliver quality patient care.
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary.
  • Assist with processing of specimens when needed.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or meet local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of clinical laboratory testing experience is required.
  • Proficient with computers; familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus.
  • High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs.

Nice-to-haves

  • ASCP or AMT certification preferred but not required.
  • Generalist experience and blood bank experience is required (at least 1 year).
