About the position
The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for analyzing samples of blood, tissue, and body fluids to determine their chemical content, cell count, drug levels, or blood type. This role involves performing various laboratory tests, maintaining equipment, and ensuring accurate reporting of results while adhering to safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Analyze samples of blood, tissue, and body fluids to determine chemical content, cell count, drug levels, or blood type.
- Prepare reagents, QC, and calibrators for routine and special tests.
- Perform routine and safety program checks and preventative maintenance on laboratory instrumentation.
- Conduct patient testing in all areas of the laboratory.
- Perform and report QC and calibrations as required, recalibrating if necessary.
- Draw blood specimens from patients as required by the supervisor.
- Call critical results per procedure.
- Log and process specimens, keeping accurate records and preparing reports clearly and completely.
- Participate in proficiency testing.
- Assist lab aides and other hospital staff with testing information and collection criteria.
- Answer phones and relay information in a courteous professional manner.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or Chemistry.
- ASCP or CSMLS or equivalent certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
- Good communication skills.
- Self-motivated and detail-oriented, able to work under pressure and multi-task.
- Proper use of phone etiquette is necessary.
- Skills for problem solving either individually or as part of a team.
Nice-to-haves
- Phlebotomy experience preferred.
