About the position
The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing, processing, analyzing, and reporting laboratory tests for the Osceola Community Hospital (ORHC). This role involves maintaining accurate laboratory documentation and following established policies and procedures to ensure quality and compliance in laboratory operations.
Responsibilities
- Accurately performs testing in all clinical areas of the laboratory including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank, serology, phlebotomy, immunology, and immunoassay.
- Performs basic calibration, quality control checks, and preventative maintenance on assigned instrumentation.
- Initiates and follows through with basic troubleshooting of equipment as necessary or assigned under the oversight of the Laboratory Manager.
- Logs and completes corrective actions for quality control in all clinical laboratory departments.
- Performs proficiency testing according to established policy.
- Communicates laboratory data to appropriate departments and individuals in a timely and accurate manner.
- Distinguishes between normal and abnormal clinical laboratory parameters and takes actions to ensure all abnormal results are rechecked.
- Alerts appropriate staff for abnormal results and documents these actions.
- Collects, receives, processes, and transports blood and other laboratory specimens from patients following accepted standards of practice.
- Performs clerical functions such as record keeping and filing as required.
Requirements
- Graduate of a formal laboratory training program and minimum of 1 year related experience.
- Associate Degree in Laboratory Science is required to perform highly complex testing.
- Certification by ASCP or NCA is preferred.
