About the position

The Digital Archivist at Mount Sinai's Levy Library is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of digital archival systems, including the management of both digitized and born-digital materials. This role involves collaboration with the Archives and Records Management team, providing reference and outreach support, and ensuring the preservation and accessibility of archival collections. The position requires a strong understanding of archival standards and practices, as well as project management skills to oversee various digital initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Ingest and manage large born-digital and digitized record sets into Digital Preservation and Storage Environment (Archivematica and Azure).
  • Manage web archives using Archive-It, including adding new seeds, testing crawls, and creating metadata.
  • Maintain relationships with outside vendors to support software and subscriptions.
  • Assist Archives staff with procedures relating to the transfer, arrangement, and description of digital material.
  • Process, arrange, and describe digital archival material in accordance with professional best practices.
  • Maintain documentation of archival practices for use by the Archives.
  • Advise on the creation and management of digital surrogates of various materials.
  • Stay updated on trends in archival management and digital preservation.
  • Research, pilot, and implement special digital projects with the Director of Archives.
  • Advise and assist donors in pre-custodial activities for digital collections.
  • Serve as the Archives representative at professional communities and events.
  • Administer and maintain the Archives digital discovery and preservation systems.
  • Maintain and update the Archives web presence.
  • Evaluate Archives metadata and digital objects for migration and clean-up activities.
  • Respond to reference requests related to the history of Mount Sinai and the Archives.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Archives for ongoing reference support.
  • Provide education and advocacy for the Archives catalog to the Mount Sinai community.
  • Participate in outreach activities, including curating exhibits and writing blog posts.
  • Assist in planning processes for the Archives Division and manage special projects.

Requirements

  • ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library, Information Science, or a related field with a concentration in Archives, Digital Preservation, or Records Administration.
  • 1-3 years' experience processing archival collections.
  • 1-3 years' experience with archival technologies and tools related to digital archives.
  • Experience with AtoM, Archivematica, and BitCurator is desirable.
  • Experience with project management and ability to set priorities and deadlines.
  • Commitment to ethical and inclusive description practices.
  • Basic experience in at least one scripting language (ideally Python).
  • Familiarity with standard library and archival metadata schemas.

Nice-to-haves

  • Digital Archives Specialist Certificate from the Society of American Archivists.
  • Familiarity with ePadd or other email preservation tools.
  • Comfort using basic command line for software tasks.
  • Experience with database and project management software.
  • Familiarity with HTML markup.
