The Medical Office Clerk position at Camp Pendleton, CA, involves providing clerical and administrative support within the Physical Therapy Department, Radiology, and associated Branch Clinics of the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. This facility serves over 75,000 beneficiaries, and the role is crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of medical and ancillary care services. The Medical Office Clerk will be responsible for maintaining productivity levels comparable to peers, participating in peer reviews, and engaging in performance improvement activities. A strong emphasis is placed on adhering to infection control guidelines, practicing aseptic techniques, and ensuring safety procedures are followed in all patient interactions. In this role, the clerk will handle various administrative tasks, including managing patient appointment schedules, verifying and updating patient demographics and insurance information, and documenting patient care accurately and concisely. The clerk will also be expected to operate automated systems such as MHS GENESIS and participate in clinical staff performance improvement and risk management functions. The position requires a proactive approach to anticipating potential problems and emergencies, ensuring that appropriate interventions are made, and notifying supervisors of any issues that cannot be managed independently. The Medical Office Clerk will also be involved in training and providing direction to supporting government employees, attending meetings to evaluate patient care, and participating in the command's Performance Improvement Program. This role demands a high level of professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to ongoing education and training to enhance personal and professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clerical and administrative support in wards, clinics, or other clinical departments of a medical treatment facility.
  • Maintain productivity levels comparable to peers and participate in peer review and performance improvement activities.
  • Practice aseptic techniques and comply with infection control guidelines.
  • Perform efficiently in emergency patient situations, following established protocols and documenting events accurately.
  • Anticipate potential problems and make appropriate interventions, notifying supervisors as necessary.
  • Participate in the implementation of the Family Advocacy Program, including medical examinations and documentation.
  • Maintain awareness of patient rights and ensure sensitivity in all interactions.
  • Document patient care accurately and in a timely manner, utilizing automated systems such as MHS GENESIS.
  • Screen, record, and redirect telephone calls and secure messages, using appropriate etiquette and procedures.
  • Check-in patients for appointments and verify/update patient information using MHS GENESIS.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least 6 months of experience in an office setting.
  • General knowledge of Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is desired.
  • Experience with military healthcare systems such as AHLTA, CHCS, and MHS GENESIS.
