About the position

The Medical Operations Director at Best Friends Animal Society is responsible for leading the operational support teams for animal care at the Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. This role focuses on providing veterinary services to animals in care, ensuring efficient cross-department operations, and achieving no-kill objectives by 2025. The director is accountable for fostering a positive team culture, managing budgets, and overseeing the delivery of lifesaving programs and services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the operational support teams for animal care departments at Best Friends' Sanctuary.
  • Develop efficient means of providing shelter medicine and operational assistance for animals in care.
  • Partner with leadership to support temporary operating needs across various teams.
  • Define and execute lifesaving operational objectives related to veterinary medicine.
  • Create a positive work environment that promotes growth and maximizes individual impact.
  • Oversee the veterinary services budget, managing expenses and revenues.
  • Ensure the maintenance of a safe workplace and adherence to safety practices.
  • Participate in capital improvement project planning.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of proven successful leadership experience in animal operations with a lifesaving focus.
  • Experience overseeing animal sheltering or veterinary medicine operations.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to act decisively in fast-paced situations.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and presentation experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and familiarity with shelter software.

  • Experience working for or with a humane organization.
  • Familiarity with nonjudgmental philosophies in customer engagement.
  • Experience in supporting and developing relationships with volunteers and donors.
