About the position

The Arcata Community Health Center (ACHC) is committed to removing barriers to healthcare access in the heart of the Redwoods. The receptionist plays a crucial role in creating first impressions for patients, greeting them both in-person and over the phone, making appointments, answering questions, and managing information in the electronic scheduling and records system. This position requires a caring and compassionate individual who can multi-task, work effectively in a team environment, and is dedicated to helping patients access necessary services in a busy healthcare setting. Related experience or training is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Checks-in patients, greets visitors and routes them to the person who can help them.
  • Schedules EMR appointments in person and by phone.
  • Determines method of payment and collects necessary information.
  • Issues required forms and checks patient forms for completeness and accuracy.
  • Obtains consent for treatment and updates registration.
  • Facilitates enrollment into applicable insurance programs.
  • Updates patient information and inputs new patient information.
  • Checks patients out and may schedule return appointments.
  • Routes calls and takes messages, answering patient inquiries or routing questions to the correct person.
  • Makes new charts where applicable and reviews billing sheets for completeness.
  • Collects fees and co-payments, checks account balances, and requests past due payments.
  • Posts encounters and payments and reconciles payments, locking away cash at the end of the day.
  • Maintains communication with providers through the Medical Assistants and Clinic Nurse Coordinator to ensure optimum patient flow.
  • Maintains inventory of forms and office supplies and orders as needed.
  • Sanitizes work area and participates in appropriate staff meetings.
  • Adheres to ODCHC's attendance policy and performs other duties as designated by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to handle difficult or confrontational situations in a calm, consistent, and equitable manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and compose simple correspondence.
  • Ability to keep records accurately and carefully.
  • Courteous and efficient manner on telephone and in person.
  • Ability to prioritize when several tasks are presented at once.
  • Ability to learn and work with new computer programs.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One to three months related experience and/or training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting or similar role.

Benefits

  • Compensation range of $22.00 to $25.30 per hour, with new hires starting at $22.00.
  • Additional $0.75 hourly differential for Hmong and Spanish speakers who pass a language exam.
