About the position

The Medical Receptionist I position at UMC Northport is a vital role within the healthcare team, responsible for ensuring a smooth and efficient operation of the clinic. This position involves receiving, screening, handling, and distributing incoming calls, as well as scheduling and greeting patients. The Medical Receptionist plays a key role in managing patient flow, ensuring that patients are seen in a timely manner, and providing excellent customer service both over the phone and in person. The role requires a friendly and welcoming demeanor, as the receptionist is often the first point of contact for patients and visitors. In addition to greeting patients, the Medical Receptionist is responsible for collecting payments, managing the checkout process, and ensuring that all patient information is accurately recorded and updated in the electronic patient record system. This includes verifying insurance information and ensuring that all necessary paperwork is properly scanned and routed. The receptionist will also coordinate future appointment scheduling and referrals, ensuring that patients have a seamless experience when accessing healthcare services. The position is based at the University Medical Center clinic located in Northport, Alabama, and operates on a regular schedule from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:45 PM, with limited after-hours work expected. Responsibilities

  • Receive, screen, handle, and distribute incoming calls.
  • Schedule and greet patients upon arrival.
  • Collect payments and manage the checkout process.
  • Ensure effective and timely patient flow through the clinic.
  • Screen and update intake and demographic information for patients.
  • Coordinate future appointment scheduling and referrals.
  • Post and reconcile daily patient payments.
  • Ensure insurance information is current and accurate in the electronic patient record.
  • Properly scan and route patient paperwork to the medical record.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of general office or customer service experience.
  • Experience as a Student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or in student-oriented roles is acceptable if detailed in the application.
  • Efficient and accurate computer and data entry skills.
  • Ability to perform cashier functions, including accepting payments and balancing end-of-day processes.
  • Excellent communication, public relations, customer service, and telephone etiquette skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle incoming calls and patients simultaneously.
  • Ability to exemplify the core values and mission of the organization.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, diplomacy, and tact in patient and staff interactions.
  • Understanding of the need for strict confidentiality of protected health information and adherence to HIPAA regulations.
