About the position

The Medical Records Technician is responsible for maintaining and completing medical records in both electronic and paper formats. This role involves compiling, evaluating, and processing all records to ensure accuracy and completeness regarding patients' conditions, treatments, and health outcomes. The ideal candidate will provide excellent customer service and maintain good working relationships within the department and with other departments, ensuring timely responses to information requests from various sources.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and complete medical records in electronic and paper formats.
  • Compile, evaluate, and process all records for accuracy and completeness.
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
  • Timely respond to requests for information from patients, clinical departments, Patient Financial Services, and legal entities.
  • Compile, review, and file documentation of patients' conditions, treatments, and health outcomes.
  • Assign chart deficiencies in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Resolve medical record discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information.
  • Maintain the master patient index within the organization's enterprise computer system.
  • Interact with Patient Access, Patient Financial Services, and physician office staff for information verification.
  • Process all requests for patient health information as allowed by healthcare regulations.
  • Maintain patient confidence and protect hospital operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Learn organizational policies and procedures as well as regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare statistical reports by collecting and summarizing medical care and census information.
  • Collaborate with departments handling patient records and accurately scan & index documents to appropriate patient charts.
  • Perform a variety of tasks and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Health information management secondary education course work preferred.
  • 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
  • AHIMA or AAPC certification preferred; may be accepted in lieu of some years of experience.
