About the position

The Medical Records Technician (Health Information Technician) position at the Department of Justice involves analyzing and managing medical records to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and standards. The role is crucial in maintaining the integrity of medical documentation for individuals in correctional facilities, supporting their healthcare needs while ensuring public safety. The technician will work closely with medical staff and external entities to process medical information requests and perform audits, contributing to the overall health services operations within the Bureau of Prisons.

Responsibilities

• Analyze medical records for completeness, consistency, and compliance with JCAHO and BOP requirements.
• Perform monthly medical record audits in coordination with medical staff.
• Process requests for medical information from outside hospitals, clinics, and physicians.
• Respond to requests for the release of BOP medical information, including court orders and requests from U.S. Attorneys.
• Code complex diagnoses and procedures for discharged inmates using ICD-9-CM.
• Establish medical records for all new admissions and monitor records for transferred patients.
• Perform administrative duties including preparing reports, purchase orders, and medical referrals.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-5 level in federal service.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and medical records documentation.
• Experience in coding records using ICD-9-CM.
• Ability to analyze medical records for compliance with standards.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in developing statistical reports for health service operations.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations regarding Freedom of Information and Privacy Act requirements.
