About the position

The Medical Records Technician (Office Automation) position at the Naval Hospital Jacksonville involves managing patient records and ensuring compliance with health information management regulations. The role requires shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and is part of the Admissions Department. The technician will be responsible for confirming patient eligibility, coordinating the collection of patient valuables, and utilizing electronic health record systems to support patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Confirm eligibility status and requirements of patients to create appropriate inpatient encounters.
  • Coordinate the collection and release of patient valuables and personal effects.
  • Retrieve electronic health information from systems storing medical records as needed for direct inpatient care.
  • Prepare, create, and electronically submit birth certificate applications and congratulatory birth correspondence, verifying the accuracy of documents.
  • Use computer programs to perform admission and disposition functions.
  • Utilize automated healthcare systems to research medical documents.

Requirements

  • One year of general experience in clerical, office, or related work that demonstrates the ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for the position.
  • Experience with medical terminology and documentation in electronic health record systems such as GENESIS and HAIMS.
  • Knowledge of compliance with regulatory rules regarding patient privacy and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • A qualified typist with the ability to type 40 words per minute with three or fewer errors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with medical records management and health information systems.
