About the position

The Medical Scribe at Oak Street Health plays a crucial role in supporting primary care providers by managing clinical documentation, allowing them to focus on delivering exceptional patient care. This position involves observing patient visits, documenting encounters in real-time, and assisting with clinical documentation improvement. The role is ideal for individuals pursuing careers in healthcare, particularly those on a pre-med track, as it provides valuable experience in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Documenting patient encounters in a structured note, including the history of the present illness, assessment, plan, and physical exam.
  • Assigning appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes.
  • Preparing After Visit Summaries.
  • Consulting with the provider to ensure accurate and specific documentation.
  • Requesting and reviewing medical records to support clinical documentation improvement.
  • Leveraging population health tools to enhance clinical documentation.
  • Preparing for and supporting Daily Huddles and Clinical Documentation Reviews.
  • Placing orders and referrals as needed.
  • Addressing administrative tasks and supporting the care team with additional responsibilities related to clinical documentation.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications from a pre-medical degree or prior clinical experience.
  • Advanced listening and communication skills.
  • Strong computer literacy and ability to learn new technical workflows.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Polish, Russian, or other languages spoken by the communities served.
  • Ability to adapt to new workflows and quickly learn new concepts and skills.
  • Ability to type 70+ words per minute.
  • Ability to take direction and work as part of a team providing patient care.
  • Excellent job attendance and ability to work in-person in clinics.
  • Ability to commit to at least 1 year in the role, with 2+ years being ideal.
  • Ability to work approximately 40-45 hours per week during clinic hours.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior clinical experience, including shadowing and/or volunteering.
  • Prior scribe or transcription experience.
