About the position
The Medical Scribe at Oak Street Health plays a crucial role in supporting primary care providers by managing clinical documentation, allowing them to focus on delivering exceptional patient care. This position involves observing patient visits, documenting encounters in real-time, and assisting with clinical documentation improvement. The role is ideal for individuals pursuing careers in healthcare, particularly those on a pre-med track, as it provides valuable experience in a clinical setting.
Responsibilities
- Documenting patient encounters in a structured note, including the history of the present illness, assessment, plan, and physical exam.
- Assigning appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes.
- Preparing After Visit Summaries.
- Consulting with the provider to ensure accurate and specific documentation.
- Requesting and reviewing medical records to support clinical documentation improvement.
- Leveraging population health tools to enhance clinical documentation.
- Preparing for and supporting Daily Huddles and Clinical Documentation Reviews.
- Placing orders and referrals as needed.
- Addressing administrative tasks and supporting the care team with additional responsibilities related to clinical documentation.
Requirements
- Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications from a pre-medical degree or prior clinical experience.
- Advanced listening and communication skills.
- Strong computer literacy and ability to learn new technical workflows.
- Fluency in Spanish, Polish, Russian, or other languages spoken by the communities served.
- Ability to adapt to new workflows and quickly learn new concepts and skills.
- Ability to type 70+ words per minute.
- Ability to take direction and work as part of a team providing patient care.
- Excellent job attendance and ability to work in-person in clinics.
- Ability to commit to at least 1 year in the role, with 2+ years being ideal.
- Ability to work approximately 40-45 hours per week during clinic hours.
Nice-to-haves
- Prior clinical experience, including shadowing and/or volunteering.
- Prior scribe or transcription experience.
