About the position

The Medical Support Assistant serves as the initial point of contact for patients in the Veterans Health Administration, responsible for scheduling appointments, managing electronic orders, and ensuring efficient patient flow within the clinic. This role requires proficiency in data entry and familiarity with medical terminology, as well as strong customer service skills to assist patients effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and check in patients, assisting with mobile check-in as needed.
  • Gather medical information and refer patients to appropriate healthcare team members.
  • Document patient complaints and report any issues to management.
  • Perform receptionist duties including answering and routing phone calls.
  • Validate and update patient demographics and verify insurance information.
  • Follow VA Scheduling Directive and ensure timely scheduling of appointments.
  • Prepare for clinic operations by printing appointment and clinic lists.
  • Monitor and process active/pending consults and provider orders.
  • Complete reports and record meeting minutes as required.
  • Maintain warehouse supplies and clinic forms.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Six months of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or administrative work, or one year above high school education, or a combination of both.
  • Ability to utilize computer systems for data entry and patient management.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting or with medical terminology is preferred.
