Medical Surgical RN

About the position

Compass Government Solutions LLC is looking for a Medical Surgical RN to provide services for the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) Bethesda. In preparation to bid on this contract, we are seeking qualified candidates willing to be included in our proposal as interested and skilled individuals.

Responsibilities

• React to emergency situations, e.g., cardiac or respiratory arrest, hemorrhage, shock, severe physical trauma and psychiatric reaction.
• Serve as a member of the resuscitation team and activate RRT, Code Blue.
• Assess patients' conditions for potential or life-threatening crises.
• Distinguish between normal and abnormal physical findings from assessments.
• Plan appropriate nursing care set forth by the MTF, and in accordance with JC guidelines.
• Make rounds, evaluate patient’s condition, answer questions, give instructions, take vital signs, and check functioning of medical equipment.
• Record vital signs and observations in accordance with documentation policy and standards of care.
• Prepare equipment and supplies and assist physician during treatments and examinations.
• Cleanse wounds and incisions, change dressings, and administer prescribed medications.
• Start, replenish, and discontinue IVs and blood; manage PCA pumps and epidural infusions.
• Contribute to the medical/nursing plan of care by observing, recognizing, recording, and reporting changes in the patient’s condition.
• Educate patients and families regarding involvement in the plan of care and follow-up care.
• Observe and record medications, treatments, and patient reactions.
• Notify supervisor and/or physician of significant changes in patient’s response to treatment.
• Ensure patients are properly informed and prepared for a variety of special tests and examinations.
• Provide individualized health teaching for patients and their significant others.
• Perform special tests and procedures following appropriate standard protocols.
• Assist in nursing quality assurance activities through problem identification and monitoring results.
• Provide care within ethical and legal boundaries and ensure compliance with standards of care.
• Report to the Nurse Manager and take direction from charge nurse and house supervisor.
• Participate in customer service initiatives and medical readiness activities.
• Participate as preceptor in the orientation, training, and evaluation of newly assigned personnel.
• Promote patient and staff safety through adherence to accepted safety and infection control standards.

Requirements

• Accredited school of Nursing (Diploma, AD or BSN).
• RN with a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is desirable.
• Three (3) years full-time experience within the last five years in caring for adult patients in an acute care setting.
• Knowledgeable of equipment and supply terminology and skilled in proper use.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English well enough to communicate effectively.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with computerized patient care systems including MHS Genesis.
• Knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders/conditions and diagnostic studies.
