About the position

The Medical Technician - Phlebotomist position at the Atlanta VA Medical Center involves performing phlebotomy and specimen processing, as well as providing customer service support within the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service. This temporary full-time role requires proficiency in laboratory techniques and patient interaction, ensuring accurate specimen collection and processing for various laboratory tests.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture) and other laboratory specimen collections on patients.
  • Assist in training other personnel in proper phlebotomy and specimen collection techniques.
  • Receive and process a variety of laboratory specimens according to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform accessioning procedures manually or via computer terminal, labeling specimens and request forms appropriately.
  • Prepare aliquots and deliver specimens to the appropriate testing section in the laboratory.
  • Process Microbiology, Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Blood Bank, and Immunology specimens for testing.
  • Prepare specimens for shipment to reference laboratories.
  • Act as a customer support representative for the laboratory front desk, greeting patients and providing guidance.
  • Answer non-technical inquiries and refer technical inquiries to appropriate laboratory staff.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in technical medical laboratory support work or related fields.
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in relevant subjects, or equivalent combinations of education and experience.
