The individual in this position will be responsible for performing tests on patient specimens in accordance with established policies and procedures specific to the laboratory section. It is essential to maintain competency across all identified sections of the laboratory to ensure high-quality results. In addition to performing tests, the role requires the interpretation and entry of data to prepare comprehensive patient laboratory reports. Effective communication is vital, as the individual must document and communicate all critical and significant results in line with laboratory policy, ensuring that team members and customers are kept adequately informed of any important findings. The position also involves maintaining biomedical equipment according to laboratory policies, performing necessary maintenance tasks, and documenting these activities to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Quality control and quality assurance are key components of this role, as the individual will be responsible for performing QC/QA procedures to guarantee the accuracy of test results. This includes managing reagent inventory, ensuring proper labeling and storage, and tracking expiration dates. The ability to identify and resolve problems that may arise during testing is crucial, as is the capacity to communicate effectively with other staff members and customers to ensure appropriate follow-up. The position also includes a teaching component, where the individual will instruct new staff members, on-the-job trainees, residents, and students. Proper documentation of teaching and training activities is necessary to meet the requirements of accrediting agencies. Overall, the role encompasses a variety of responsibilities that contribute to the effective operation of the laboratory and the delivery of quality patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tests to analyze patient specimens according to section specific policy and procedure.
  • Maintains competency in all identified sections.
  • Interprets/enters data to prepare a patient laboratory report.
  • Communicates and documents all critical and significant results in accordance with laboratory policy.
  • Keeps team members and customers adequately informed.
  • Maintains biomedical equipment according to laboratory policy.
  • Performs, documents and completes required daily, weekly and monthly maintenance.
  • Performs QC/QA to ensure quality test results.
  • Maintains reagent inventory, labels and stores reagents appropriately; dating when received, opened and expiration.
  • Identifies and resolves problems that arise.
  • Communicates well with other staff members and our customers to ensure excellent and appropriate follow up.
  • Instructs new staff members, on the job trainees, residents and students.
  • Documents teaching and training appropriately to ensure required documentation for accrediting agencies.
  • Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum experience of zero to six months in a laboratory setting.
  • Graduate of Medical Technology Program is desired.
  • Previous work experience in a laboratory is preferred.
  • American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certification preferred or eligible.
