The Medical Technologist (Advanced Staff Technologist) position at the Veterans Health Administration in Augusta, GA, involves performing complex laboratory functions as a generalist. The role requires working independently, particularly during night shifts, and encompasses a wide range of testing procedures on biological specimens. The technologist is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and validity of laboratory results, which are crucial for patient care. This position also includes responsibilities related to sample collection, processing, and communication of critical results to healthcare providers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform testing procedures on a variety of biological specimens and environmental samples using manual and automated techniques.
  • Maintain validity of assay systems by appropriate testing of reagents prior to use for patient testing.
  • Evaluate the validity of data in relation to test systems and assay procedures.
  • Correlate and integrate information and perform additional testing to confirm abnormal results.
  • Collect venous blood samples from patients adhering to safety and patient care requirements.
  • Process specimens and select appropriate procedures based on specimen type and patient information.
  • Accurately record data in logs and worksheets with attention to ID verification and manual recording.
  • Recognize critical value results and communicate them effectively to the patient's provider.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related field is required.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies is necessary.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in core laboratory functions is preferred.
