About the position

The Medical Technologist - Advanced Staff Technologist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves performing complex laboratory functions on various biological specimens and environmental samples. This role requires a high level of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal supervision, focusing on advanced testing procedures and quality control in a clinical laboratory setting.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary operator on new test systems.
  • Maintain operations including preventive maintenance and training on new test systems.
  • Assist in writing procedures and other documents as directed.
  • Modify or adapt new methods or techniques to improve or expand services.
  • Develop protocols for performance of tests and evaluation of results.
  • Ensure laboratory tests and procedures are consistent with accrediting agencies' standards and requirements.
  • Recognize methodology limitations and consider these when drawing conclusions about testing results.
  • Perform validation/method verification studies for new systems.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory including reagents, calibrators, quality control, etc.
  • Consult with healthcare providers on logical protocols to confirm diagnoses or risk assessments.
  • Provide technical advice to staff and other healthcare members.
  • Assist with staff competency assessments as applicable.
  • Direct staff in workflow and daily bench assignments/duties.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with federal regulations associated with the Clinical Lab Improvement Act of 1988.
  • Instruct and coordinate teaching activities for Medical Technology students.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by NAACLS or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT.
  • One year of creditable experience equivalent to GS-09 level in a related position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with advanced laboratory techniques and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures.
  • Ability to provide or coordinate staff development and training.
