About the position

The Medical Technologist Ancillary (Point of Care) Testing Coordinator at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for overseeing all aspects of ancillary testing, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and coordinating quality control programs. This role involves planning, implementing, and monitoring testing procedures, as well as training non-laboratory personnel in testing protocols. The position is crucial for maintaining the quality and safety of patient testing across various sites within the healthcare system.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and coordinate quality control programs for ancillary testing sites.
  • Ensure compliance with quality control, proficiency testing programs, and safety standards as dictated by JCAHO and CAP.
  • Act as the technical advisor for quality control and accreditation for ancillary testing.
  • Develop documentation plans for all ancillary testing sites as part of a continuous quality improvement plan.
  • Coordinate with clinical programs to perform ancillary testing and provide estimates on testing analyzers and methods used.
  • Design and monitor training and proficiency evaluation programs for non-laboratory personnel performing ancillary testing procedures.
  • Serve as the Laboratory Safety Officer, updating safety manuals and training programs.
  • Assure all safety procedures meet CAP, JCAHO, and OSHA requirements.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in a related position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical laboratory setting with moderate and high complexity testing.
  • Knowledge of laboratory information technology systems.
  • Experience with quality assurance and continuous quality improvement processes.
