About the position

The Medical Technologist in the Blood Bank at RWJBarnabas Health is responsible for performing all duties related to the preparation and testing of blood specimens. This role involves documenting all necessary information and performing quality control checks as appropriate, ensuring that all results are accurately recorded. The technologist will assist students and non-certified personnel in the lab, contributing to a collaborative learning environment. Additionally, the position requires participation in the evaluation, documentation, and implementation of technical assays, which are critical for maintaining high standards of laboratory practice. In this role, the Medical Technologist will perform and interpret both routine and complex assays on blood samples. This includes preparing blood and blood components for transfusion to patients, conducting blood typing and antibody identification, and ensuring compatibility through blood group antigen testing. The technologist will also be responsible for all related documentation tasks, which are essential for maintaining compliance with regulatory standards and ensuring patient safety. The position is full-time and operates on a night shift schedule, providing essential services during hours when the lab is less staffed. Responsibilities

  • Performs and interprets routine and complex assays on blood.
  • Prepares blood/blood components for transfusion to a patient.
  • Performs blood types and antibodies identification as well as blood group antigens and compatibility testing.
  • Documents all related tasks and results accurately.
  • Participates in evaluating, documenting, and implementing technical assays.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or related field.
  • Blood Bank Experience.
  • Meets education and experience equivalent to the guidelines mandated by CMS, CLIA, and NJSDHSS.

Nice-to-haves

  • ASCP or NCA certification preferred.
