About the position

The Medical Technologist (Hematology Technical Specialist) plays a crucial role within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, acting as a technical consultant in a clinical laboratory setting. This position is responsible for maintaining the laboratory's hematology and coagulation program, ensuring compliance with departmental standards, and interacting with management and vendors to provide high-quality testing services. The specialist monitors laboratory accreditation and provides expert advice on complex testing procedures, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an expert providing authoritative advice and consultation for complex tests in hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis.
  • Conduct studies and recommend changes to improve the specialty area and correct deficiencies.
  • Design workflows to achieve objectives in the clinical specialty area.
  • Advise on the appropriateness of specific tests and alternate testing options based on clinical context.
  • Identify training needs for laboratory services and develop training programs.
  • Resolve issues associated with complex data or unique testing aspects where no precedent exists.
  • Analyze emerging trends and technology to adopt appropriate methods and testing.
  • Apply laws, policies, and regulatory requirements to maintain specialized testing standards.
  • Maintain process control through a quality assurance program.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by a recognized certifying body.
  • Experience in performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in a clinical laboratory setting.

  • Advanced knowledge of medical laboratory technology concepts and principles.
  • Skill in applying new scientific developments to laboratory testing.
  • Ability to instruct and train newly hired technologists and clinical pathology residents.
