About the position

The Medical Technologist (Hemology Technical Specialist) serves as a technical consultant within the Phology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs. This role is responsible for maintaining the laboratory's hemology and coagulation program, ensuring compliance with laboratory accreditation, and providing expert advice on complex testing procedures. The specialist interacts with management and vendors, monitors laboratory components, and conducts studies to improve specialty areas.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an expert providing authoritative advice and consultation for complex tests in hemology, coagulation, and urinalysis.
  • Conduct studies and recommend changes to correct deficiencies and improve the specialty area.
  • Recommend new or replacement instrumentation and design workflows to accomplish objectives in the clinical specialty area.
  • Advise on the appropriateness of specific tests and consider the clinical context and usefulness of test information.
  • Identify training needs appropriate for the type and complexity of laboratory services performed.
  • Analyze emerging trends and technology and adopt appropriate methods and testing.
  • Maintain process control in a specialty area through a multifaceted quality assurance program.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience or five years of clinical laboratory experience performing moderate and/or high complexity testing.
  • Current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the ASCP or equivalent.

  • Ability to instruct newly hired technologists and clinical pathology residents.
