About the position

The Medical Technologist (Lab Manager) at Larned State Hospital is responsible for overseeing technical laboratory services, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines, and providing technical consultation. This role involves monitoring laboratory performance, guiding staff, and maintaining quality assurance procedures. The Lab Manager will also be involved in training and evaluating laboratory personnel, as well as performing phlebotomy when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the technical performance of the laboratory testing and take appropriate action.
  • Coordinate, confer with, and assist staff in performing laboratory testing.
  • Guide and evaluate the technical work of lower-level laboratory technicians and technologists.
  • Determine the need for further studies of specimens.
  • Establish quality assurance procedures.
  • Review test results.
  • Assure TJC compliance.
  • Prepare data for discussion with Lab Director, LSH Medical Director, or other LSH personnel.
  • Provide employee orientation and supervision as appropriate.
  • Provide training and performance improvement activities for laboratory staff and other LSH disciplines.
  • Assist in determining the competency of technical laboratory staff and complete performance evaluations on supervisees.
  • Develop, maintain, revise, and review policies and procedures for the laboratory and communicate with the Laboratory Director.
  • Conform to CLIA 88, TJC, CMS, and OSHA standards.
  • Assure completion of routine and regular QC and QA practices.
  • Ensure and evaluate proficiency testing for whole blood glucose operators.
  • Develop protocols and review waived testing.
  • Monitor laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Resolve problems of technical nature.
  • Calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments.
  • Ensure inventory of supplies is maintained.
  • Ensure equipment is properly functioning and all required maintenance is performed.
  • Develop alternatives for testing when equipment is down or not functioning properly.
  • Perform phlebotomies as needed.
  • Function as a bench tech as needed.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Medical Technology from an accredited program.
  • 2 years training and experience in non-waived testing.
  • MLT certification.
  • Previous supervisory/management experience in a laboratory setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with TJC survey readiness.
