About the position

The Medical Technologist (Laboratory Information Manager) at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is responsible for overseeing the installation and use of laboratory information systems (LIS) and hospital information systems (HIS). This role involves developing policies, maintaining coding for laboratory tests, analyzing trends in software and technology, and providing expert advice on information systems. The position also includes performing laboratory procedures across various disciplines and ensuring the effective operation of laboratory computer systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and recommend new policies and procedures for the laboratory information system (LIS) and hospital information system (HIS).
  • Implement and maintain coding and mapping for laboratory test ordering, reporting, billing, and workload recording systems.
  • Analyze emerging trends, software, and technology to meet agency goals.
  • Advise organizational levels on the functions and capabilities of the information system.
  • Perform laboratory procedures in areas such as chemistry, hematology, and microbiology.
  • Serve as a backup coordinator for P&LMS.
  • Monitor computer resources and recommend future software and hardware needs.
  • Train P&LMS staff on computer usage and software programs.
  • Design and maintain databases for departmental use.
  • Coordinate CPT and RVU reviews to ensure accuracy.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) from recognized bodies.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • At least 1 year of credible experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) directly related to the position.

  • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and hospital information systems (HIS).
