About the position

The position involves performing, evaluating, and monitoring laboratory tests as authorized within established protocols. The incumbent will select and perform additional procedures when indicated, monitor workflow, and make necessary adjustments to complete work in an appropriate time frame. Responsibilities also include evaluating results for clinical significance, validity, and appropriateness, and following prescribed policy in the reporting and notification of test results. The role requires performing and documenting calibration, maintenance, and repair of instruments and equipment, recognizing indicators of test and/or instrument malfunction, and implementing appropriate corrections. Quality control and quality assurance are also key components of the job, as well as ensuring compliance with all accrediting agency standards. The incumbent will provide general direction, training, and technical assistance to medical laboratory technicians and support staff, and assist in improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures. The position supports critical care departments by providing timely and accurate laboratory results during high acuity patient events.

Responsibilities

  • Performs, evaluates, and monitors laboratory tests as authorized within established protocols.
  • Evaluates results for clinical significance, validity, and appropriateness.
  • Performs and documents calibration, maintenance, and repair of instruments and equipment.
  • Performs, documents, and reviews quality control and quality assurance for improvement according to established protocol.
  • Ascertains that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing.
  • Collects specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol.
  • Provides general direction, training, competency review, and technical assistance to medical laboratory technicians and support staff.
  • Assists in improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures, policies, and processes.
  • Performs internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Performs specialty testing in areas including transfusion services, microbiology, chemistry, hematology, histology, coagulation, and flow cytometry.
  • Provides direct support and timely, accurate laboratory results for critical care departments during high acuity patient events.

Requirements

  • Medical Technologist (MT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) needs to be obtained within 1 year, or
  • Medical Technologist (MT) certification issued by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) needs to be obtained within 1 year.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related field.
  • No experience required.
