About the position

The position involves performing, evaluating, and monitoring laboratory tests as authorized within established protocols. The incumbent will select and perform additional procedures when indicated, monitor workflow, and make necessary adjustments to complete work in an appropriate timeframe. Responsibilities include evaluating results for clinical significance, validity, and appropriateness, and following prescribed policy in the reporting and notification of test results. The role also requires performing and documenting calibration and maintenance of instruments and equipment, as well as quality control, and taking corrective action when indicated. The technician will collect specimens from patients of all ages, provide technical assistance to phlebotomists and support staff, and assist in improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures. The position supports critical care departments by providing timely and accurate laboratory results during high acuity patient events and performing specialty testing in various areas. Knowledge of age-specific care is essential, as the technician must demonstrate the ability to assess and interpret patient data relative to their age-specific needs.

Responsibilities

  • Performs, evaluates, and monitors laboratory tests as authorized within established protocols.
  • Evaluates results for clinical significance, validity, and appropriateness.
  • Follows prescribed policy in the reporting and notification of test results.
  • Performs and documents calibration and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Performs and documents quality control; evaluates quality control results and takes corrective action when indicated.
  • Recognizes indicators of test and/or instrument malfunction and makes basic corrections or notifies the appropriate personnel.
  • Collects specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol.
  • Provides technical assistance to Phlebotomists and support staff.
  • Assists in improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures, policies, and processes.
  • Ensures compliance with all accrediting agency standards.
  • Performs specialty testing in areas including transfusion services, microbiology, chemistry, hematology, histology, coagulation, and flow cytometry.
  • Provides direct support and timely, accurate laboratory results for critical care departments during high acuity patient events.

Requirements

  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) needs to be obtained within 1 year, or
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification issued by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) needs to be obtained within 1 year.
  • Associate's Degree in Clinical Lab Technician or related field.
  • No experience required.
