About the position

The Medical Technologist (Microbiology) position at the Veterans Health Administration in West Palm Beach, FL, is responsible for performing a variety of laboratory tests on biological specimens and environmental samples. This role requires independent judgment and minimal supervision, focusing on microbiological testing procedures including bacteriology, mycology, serology, and urinalysis. The position is full-time and involves adherence to biosafety regulations, quality control, and the evaluation of test results.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a broad range of laboratory procedures in the Microbiology Department, including specimen plating, culturing, organism identification, and susceptibility testing.
  • Adhere to biosafety and biosecurity practices in the workplace.
  • Identify discrepancies in test results, solve problems, and present solutions.
  • Evaluate and interpret laboratory results to ensure data validity.
  • Conduct statistical analysis on quality control and quality assurance data.
  • Select appropriate procedures for service requests considering patient needs.
  • Process specimens for culture and microscopic analyses while maintaining physiological conditions.
  • Prepare reagents, special media, and biological stains; perform and calculate results for complex tests.
  • Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain laboratory instruments, ensuring correct operation through quality control checks.
  • Evaluate microbiology data validity and correlate with other laboratory and patient data.
  • Report results via computer and telephone, and document related clerical work.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or related field is required, along with specific coursework in biological sciences and chemistry.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical laboratory setting performing moderate and/or high complexity testing.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair laboratory instrumentation.
