About the position

The Medical Technologist position at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration involves performing advanced laboratory functions and providing support in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The role includes implementing quality control programs, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and overseeing laboratory operations. The incumbent will also be responsible for training staff, evaluating new laboratory instrumentation, and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory tests.

Responsibilities

  • Implement, monitor, and maintain quality control programs.
  • Write and update procedure manuals in compliance with accrediting agencies' standards.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of supplies and reagents for laboratory operations.
  • Research new products and contact vendors for procurement.
  • Act as In-Charge Technologist in the absence of laboratory supervisors and managers.
  • Evaluate new and evolving developments in laboratory instrumentation and automation.
  • Modify or adapt new methods or techniques to improve laboratory services.
  • Develop protocols for performance of tests and evaluation of results.
  • Ensure laboratory tests and procedures meet accrediting agencies' standards.
  • Perform validation method verification studies for new systems.
  • Provide advisory services to technologists, technicians, and other specialists.
  • Prepare reports and maintain administrative records.
  • Coordinate training in laboratory methods and techniques.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by relevant certification bodies.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2 years of Laboratory Generalist experience including Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, and Molecular Testing.
