About the position

The position involves performing a variety of laboratory procedures across multiple disciplines including hematology, coagulation, arterial blood gases, chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank (immunohematology), bacteriology, anatomical pathology, serology, skin tests, phlebotomies, and virology. The role requires prioritizing work, especially focusing on stat and urgent cases, and responding to hospital codes. The individual will also consult and assist other departments, patients, agencies, physicians, and the general public with questions and information regarding laboratory services.

Responsibilities

  • Perform procedures in hematology, coagulation, arterial blood gases, chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank (immunohematology), bacteriology, anatomical pathology, serology, skin tests, phlebotomies, and virology.
  • Prioritize work giving special attention to stat and urgent cases.
  • Respond to hospital codes.
  • Consult and assist other departments, patients, agencies, physicians, and the general public with questions and information.
  • Report results with accuracy and legibility via computer or following downtime criteria.
  • Investigate questionable results before verifying.
  • Call and document critical values according to protocol.
  • Assimilate and enter data in LIS and HIS.
  • Perform, monitor, and evaluate quality control. Document corrective action when results are out of control.
  • Perform and document preventative and/or corrective maintenance of analyzers and calibration of instruments.
  • Perform proficiency surveys and correlation studies and linearity studies.
  • Participate in JCAHO surveys and inspections.
  • Develop, implement, and update departmental policy and procedure manuals.
  • Assist medical laboratory technicians, lab assistants, clerks, and phlebotomists in technical aspects of their work.
  • Perform Charge Tech, QC, and Technical Tech duties as assigned.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new employees and students.
  • Train/retrain existing lab personnel.
