About the position

The Medical Technologist (Supervisory Technologist) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves full supervisory responsibility for a large staff within the Phology and Laboratory Service. The role includes overseeing test analyses and specimen examinations, ensuring performance standards are met, and initiating corrective actions as necessary. The incumbent will also be responsible for staff training, competency assessments, and the development of technical policy and procedure manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a large staff of supervisory and nonsupervisory personnel.
  • Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable performance levels.
  • Initiate corrective actions when test performance deviates from established specifications.
  • Orient, train, and assess the competency of assigned staff.
  • Develop and update technical policy and procedure manuals.
  • Plan and schedule ongoing work and adjust staffing levels or work procedures as needed.
  • Implement and monitor quality management activities.
  • Perform the full range of supervisory duties including performance evaluations and staff selection.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by recognized certification bodies.
  • At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level demonstrating core competencies.
