About the position

The Medical Technologist (Technical Specialist) in the Blood Bank at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for overseeing all operations in the transfusion medicine area of the laboratory. This includes ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, managing workflows, and providing technical guidance to staff. The incumbent will also be involved in quality assurance, staff training, and troubleshooting complex issues related to transfusion services.

Responsibilities

  • Solve complex problems related to transfusion service and perform maintenance procedures on analytical instruments.
  • Coordinate quality assurance, updates, validations, and staff training for the VistA Blood Establishment Computer System (VBECS).
  • Assist with preparations for external reviews by ensuring compliance with regulatory, licensing, and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Select, perform, evaluate, and monitor test procedures using established protocols.
  • Perform quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products, maintaining proper records for quality control reports.
  • Oversee the operation of the assigned department by coordinating technologist assignments and ensuring timely completion of workload and maintenance.
  • Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments or delegate as appropriate.
  • Identify and implement corrections for common problems and perform repairs as needed.
  • Perform a full range of laboratory testing, including duties on weekends, holidays, nights, and call-backs.
  • Ensure safety issues within the department are addressed and that staff receive appropriate safety training.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience as a certified Medical Laboratory Technician or five years of clinical laboratory experience performing moderate and/or high complexity testing.
  • Current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) from recognized certification agencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 5 years of experience as a medical technologist with progressively increasing responsibility in blood bank and transfusion medicine.
