About the position

The Medical Technologist (Urinalysis Lead) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs Beckley VA Medical Center is responsible for overseeing laboratory tests and procedures related to urinalysis. This role involves developing protocols, ensuring compliance with accrediting standards, and providing advisory services to healthcare providers and laboratory staff. The position requires a strong background in medical laboratory science and the ability to adapt new methods to improve laboratory services.

Responsibilities

  • Modifies or adapts new methods or techniques to improve or expand services.
  • Develops protocols for performance of tests and evaluation of results.
  • Ensures that laboratory tests and procedures are consistent with accrediting agencies' standards and requirements.
  • Recognizes methodology limitations such as linearity, interference, sensitivity, and specificity and considers these when drawing conclusions about the validity of testing results.
  • Performs validation/method verification studies for new systems.
  • Consults with healthcare providers on logical protocol to follow in attempting to confirm the diagnosis or risk assessment of a patient.
  • Provides advisory services to technicians, technologists, and other specialists.
  • Independently performs venipuncture with minimal failure on all inpatients, outpatients, and employees throughout the entire hospital complex utilizing universal blood and body fluid precautions, assigns priority to test requests.
  • Performs other directly related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program or currently completing a clinical training program.
  • Current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT.
  • One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9) directly related to the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and clinical microscopy.
  • Familiarity with laboratory accreditation standards and procedures.
