About the position

The Medical Technologist position at the Veterans Health Administration involves performing a wide range of laboratory procedures, including advanced and complex tasks. The role requires the ability to analyze and correct problems, maintain laboratory equipment, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. The Medical Technologist will also be responsible for quality control, training new staff, and providing excellent service as part of a healthcare team.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures and advanced laboratory tasks.
  • Recognizes deviations from expected results and analyzes problems using scientific principles.
  • Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment, including calibration and repairs.
  • Performs quality control and assurance activities related to test performance using statistical principles.
  • Ensures compliance with regulations from agencies such as CAP, TJC, AABB, and OSHA.
  • Identifies discrepancies and suggests solutions to problems.
  • Answers inquiries regarding test results and interprets results for follow-up procedures.
  • Evaluates and implements new techniques and procedures in the laboratory.
  • Assists with instruction and training of new employees and students.
  • Communicates effectively as a healthcare team member and provides excellent service.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) from recognized certification bodies.
  • At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8) or a Master's Degree in a related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2 years of laboratory generalist experience, including Blood Bank, Hematology, and Chemistry experience (5 years preferred).
  • Quality and data-driven mindset with board certification as a Medical Technologist.
  • Experience with CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission Laboratory Accreditation.
