About the position

The Medical Technologist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves conducting various technical procedures in the Core Laboratory. The role focuses on specimen processing, method development, and testing across multiple areas including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, immunoassay, and blood gases. The technologist will maintain laboratory instruments, perform quality control, calibration, reagent preparation, and data entry, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and providing critical results that affect patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a broad range of laboratory procedures including advanced and complex testing.
  • Recognize deviations from expected results and analyze problems using scientific principles.
  • Communicate predefined critical results affecting patient care.
  • Evaluate and solve problems related to the collection and processing of biological specimens.
  • Maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment.
  • Calibrate, identify malfunctions, repair, and perform preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Perform and document quality control and quality assurance activities related to test performance.
  • Adhere to biosafety and biosecurity practices in the workplace.
  • Ensure compliance with rules and regulations of regulatory agencies such as CAP, TJC, AABB, and OSHA.
  • Interpret results and suggest follow-up test selection or procedures.
  • Assist with instruction and training of new employees and students.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8) or a Master's Degree in a related field.
  • Current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) from recognized certification agencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical laboratory setting performing moderate and/or high complexity testing.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair laboratory instrumentation.
