About the position

The Medical Technologist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs Coesville VA Medical Center involves performing a wide range of laboratory procedures, including complex testing and analysis of biological specimens. The role requires maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring quality control, and adhering to biosafety regulations. The technologist will also assist in training new employees and contribute to the healthcare team by providing accurate test results and recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technician occupation.
  • Recognize deviations from expected results and analyze problems using scientific principles.
  • Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens.
  • Maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment.
  • Calibrate, identify malfunctions, repair, and perform preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Diagnose deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction.
  • Perform and document quality control and assurance activities related to test performance.
  • Adhere to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace.
  • Answer inquiries regarding test results, methodology, and factors influencing test results.
  • Collaborate with senior technologists to interpret results and suggest follow-up tests or procedures.
  • Assist in evaluating and implementing new techniques and procedures in the laboratory.
  • Assist in the instruction and training of new employees and students.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by recognized certification agencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year of experience in phlebotomy.
  • One year of experience as a lab generalist.
