About the position

The Medical Technologist position at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center involves performing a wide range of laboratory procedures, including advanced and complex testing. The role requires working off-hour shifts, specifically from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with no weekends or holidays. The technologist will be responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring quality control, and providing excellent service as part of a healthcare team. This position is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs and is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

Responsibilities

  • Perform a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technologist occupation.
  • Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
  • Maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment, including calibration and preventive maintenance.
  • Perform and document quality control and assurance activities related to test performance.
  • Adhere to practices and regulations governing biohazardous/personal safety and security in the workplace.
  • Identify discrepancies, solve problems, and present solutions regarding test results and methodologies.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member.
  • Organize work and set priorities to meet deadlines.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by recognized certification bodies.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of professional medical technology principles and practices.
  • Experience with laboratory quality control and assurance procedures.
  • Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory instrumentation.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
