About the position

The position involves performing testing procedures on patient blood, body fluid, and tissue samples according to the accepted standards of pathology practice and the policies and procedures of the contracting employer. The individual will maintain equipment and appropriately use supplies while ensuring a safe work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares specimens for a wide variety of common and specialized laboratory studies.
  • Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate action to retest and/or report per the policies of the contracting employer.
  • Runs quality-control tests according to contracting employer's policy and procedure.
  • Immediately communicates critical test results to physicians and/or nurses in accordance with the policies of the contracting employer.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment (cleaning, calibrating, repairing) and completes all required paperwork.
  • Handles specimens from patients with a wide variety of diagnoses, conditions, and diseases.
  • May assist the Pathologist with complex and invasive laboratory procedures as assigned and qualified.
  • Reads and interprets policy and procedure manuals, written physician's orders, equipment operating instructions, and safety manuals.
  • Interprets a variety of technical data (e.g. lab and diagnostic test results).
  • Applies basic math to job situations (e.g. combining mixtures, machine settings).
  • Establishes effective relationships with physicians, coworkers, and superiors.
  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • Responds to emergency/disaster situations according to the policies and procedures of the contracting employer.
  • Operates equipment and devices according to the manufacturer's operating instructions and the contracting employer's policies and procedures.
  • Provides legible, clear written or electronic documentation of all test results.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with contracting employer's policies and procedures.
  • May supervise other laboratory personnel as assigned and qualified through task assignments, direction, and evaluation of work completed.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the contracting employer who is also responsible for monitoring work in progress and reevaluating the status of the assigned work at the end of the shift/assignment.
  • Completes training for new assignments/tasks and any subsequent competency validation per the direction and procedures of the contracting employer.
  • Completes other assignments as requested and assigned.
  • May have access to personal health information ('PHI') necessary to fulfill the above duties and responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Technology program that is accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA); or training, education, and experience deemed appropriate by the contracting employer.
  • Additional certifications as required by the contracting employer.
  • Licensure as defined by state regulation or law and requirement of the contracting employer.
  • Experience as defined by the contracting employer.
