About the position

The Medical Technologist position at the Veterans Health Administration in Grand Junction, CO, is a full-time role responsible for performing a variety of laboratory tests on biological specimens and environmental samples. The technologist will work as a generalist across different lab areas, including Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Microbiology, Serology, Special Chemistry, and Urinalysis. This position requires the ability to work independently during weekends, holidays, and night shifts, ensuring timely and accurate laboratory results that are crucial for patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform testing procedures on biological specimens and environmental samples using manual and automated techniques.
  • Evaluate, interpret, and validate laboratory results, preparing reagents and verifying instrument operation.
  • Maintain assay system validity by testing reagents prior to patient testing.
  • Correlate and integrate information, performing additional tests to confirm abnormal results.
  • Complete testing in a timely manner to provide relevant clinical information to physicians.
  • Identify and correct errors in test performance and evaluate test results.
  • Collect venous blood samples from patients while adhering to safety and patient care requirements.
  • Process specimens and select appropriate procedures based on specimen type and patient information.
  • Demonstrate mastery of laboratory computer software and maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate critical value results effectively to the patient's provider.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on instruments and resolve procedural or equipment problems.
  • Train new staff on laboratory procedures and maintain professional knowledge through education and training.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or related field.
  • Two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience or five years of clinical laboratory experience in relevant areas.
  • Current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) from recognized certification agencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with laboratory quality control and assurance procedures.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with healthcare team members.
