About the position

The Medical Technologist at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for performing a variety of laboratory procedures across multiple disciplines including Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Immunohematology, Microbiology, and Serology. This role involves specimen collection, analysis, quality control, and the operation of laboratory equipment, ensuring accurate and timely laboratory results for patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Collects, handles, accessions, and labels specimens according to safety and infection control policies.
  • Evaluates the suitability of specimens for analysis and requests new specimens if necessary.
  • Prepares specimens for analysis while maintaining their physiological state.
  • Inspects blood products upon arrival and monitors expiration dates and storage temperatures.
  • Releases blood and plasma for routine and emergency use according to standard operating procedures.
  • Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products, maintaining proper records.
  • Operates various laboratory instruments and performs maintenance and calibration as needed.
  • Documents calibrations and maintenance performed for accreditation purposes.
  • Evaluates the validity of data in relation to test systems and accepted assay procedures.
  • Generates laboratory results and ensures accurate data entry into the laboratory computer system.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or equivalent from recognized certifying bodies.
  • Ability to perform moderate and/or high complexity testing in various laboratory disciplines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair laboratory instrumentation.
