The position involves traveling to funeral homes and crematories to conduct investigations and examinations to authorize cremations. The role requires investigating the circumstances of deaths within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to assist in determining the cause and manner of death, as well as the identification of the deceased. Responsibilities include requesting and reviewing medical records, interviewing family members, law enforcement, first responders, and medical professionals, and providing written reports to Medical Examiners. The position also involves daily interactions with OCME staff and funeral directors, and may include meeting with families of the deceased for identification purposes. Additionally, the role requires traveling to locations outside of the OCME for external examinations, obtaining photographs, and collecting specimens for toxicological testing from human remains. Participation in meetings with Medical Examiner and staff to discuss findings is also expected, along with training new MLI staff under the direction of the Chief of Investigations. The candidate must be able to maneuver deceased remains and lift a minimum of 50lbs.
