About the position

The Vacuum Melter position involves operating vacuum furnaces to melt materials according to specified practices. The role requires understanding and following safety procedures, managing the melting process, and directing the activities of helpers. The position is classified into three levels (Class A, B, and C) based on experience and certification, with increasing responsibilities and independence in operations.

Responsibilities

• Understand the basic information detailed on the Heat Sheet and Material Recap sheet including melt practice requirements and material weights.
• Charge material into the vacuum furnaces according to the melt practices.
• Position molds and launders into place and close the vacuum chamber prior to pumping.
• Activate vacuum pumps according to vacuum melting procedures.
• Control the use of power in the melting of the charge.
• Maintain required checks by making visual and instrument observations on temperature, vacuum levels, and pressure leak-ups.
• Take samples for metallurgical analysis and add required elements as determined by the laboratory.
• Pour off alloy into molds while maintaining proper vacuum, temperature, and power levels.
• Record or report any unusual events concerning heats for technical or Q.C. analysis.
• Clean vacuum chamber as required with the assistance of the Vacuum Melter Helpers.
• Follow safety procedures at all times in the operation of vacuum equipment.
• Direct the activities of Vacuum Melter Helpers.
• Report malfunction of vacuum equipment and any problems affecting the melting process to the foreman or supervisor.

Requirements

• Basic ability to read, write, and understand English.
• Must pass a reading comprehension and mathematics test with a score of at least 75%.
• Must be able to occasionally lift 100 lbs.
• Must be a certified forklift driver.
• Must be trained in the use of the overhead crane.
• Must be able to work any shift and overtime as required by the job.
• Must be able to communicate and work with coworkers and supervisors.
• Must have a Class B Melter Helper Certificate.
