About the position

War on the Rocks is seeking a detail-oriented membership editor who is dedicated to the clear communication of complex ideas surrounding international security. This full-time position is tailored for individuals with a background in national security, broadly defined. The role is not remote; it requires a hybrid schedule of three days in the office each week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). Therefore, candidates must either reside in the Washington, DC metro area or be willing to relocate there. As a membership editor, you will be responsible for creating and co-creating various forms of content, including newsletters, podcasts, articles, and more, specifically for the War on the Rocks membership community. This community comprises current and former military personnel, national security practitioners, government officials, scholars, and industry professionals. War on the Rocks aims to enhance the professional and public discourse on strategic issues by featuring authoritative voices through its articles, essays, and podcasts. The publication values camaraderie, creativity, and expertise, and it is essential for candidates to familiarize themselves with the publication's offerings and ethos before applying. Responsibilities

  • Create and co-create content for the War on the Rocks membership community, including newsletters, podcasts, and articles.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure high-quality content delivery.
  • Engage with the membership community to understand their needs and interests.
  • Maintain a clear and engaging communication style in all written materials.
  • Meet short-term deadlines while ensuring exceptional attention to detail.

Requirements

  • Two years of editorial experience (not including internships).
  • Deep familiarity with defense and foreign policy issues, demonstrated by a minimum of five years of professional experience (not including graduate education or internships).
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a proven track record of delivering against short-term deadlines.
  • Exceptional written English skills, with a focus on elegance and clarity.
  • Ability to work collegially with others, including managing difficult personalities.
  • Flexibility to work as part of a small team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the U.S. armed forces, the Department of Defense, or the Department of State.
  • MA or other advanced degree in international relations, strategic studies, military science, or a related topic.
